Nature-Based Education Art Project: Spooky Rocks

NATURE-INSPIRED SEASONAL CRAFTS FOR KIDS

Fall is in full swing and this is a great time to get kids excited for the season with a nature-based craft. Create pumpkins, spooky ghosts, and jack-o-lanterns with these step-by-step instructions, including modifications for younger children.

Supplies:

  • Rocks (shaped like the creatures you’re trying to create)

  • Paint (we used acrylic)

  • Paintbrush

  • Permanent marker

Directions:

  1. Search for rocks- this is a good time to challenge your child’s powers of observation. Ask them what they notice about the rock- shape, color, texture, and more.

  2. Paint the top of your rock with your background color and let it dry.

  3. When your rock is dry, you can use a permanent marker to draw on a face or other details or you can use black paint. Modification for younger children- instead of letting them draw on the details freehand, we have found that it works better to create a stencil for younger children using painter’s tape.

  4. Once everything has dried, display your spooky rocks both indoors and outdoors!
