Meet A Tree Nature Activity
Here is a fun nature activity that fosters sensory awareness and helps build your child’s powers of observation!
This activity works best in groups of two. Blindfold one partner and have the other partner guide the blindfolded person to a tree in the immediate vicinity. The blindfolded partner must rely on their other senses to observe things such as the distance from the starting place to the tree, the surrounding terrain, and most importantly, the tree itself. When observing the selected tree, the person might:
Feel its bark and make note of interesting features
Wrap their arms around the trunk of the tree to observe its circumference
Touch the leaves to determine their shape and texture (if possible)
The blindfolded person can even ask themselves the following questions to spark curiosity:
What does the tree feel like? What features do you observe?
How many steps did you take to arrive at your destination? Was the terrain flat, hilly, firm, or soft?
When the blindfolded partner has finished observing their tree, have the other partner guide them back to the starting location. The blindfolded partner can then remove their blindfold and try to find their tree! After the first partner finds their tree, switch places and start over!
